The State Investigation Agency (SIA) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police conducted a raid on the offices of the independent news organization Kashmir Times on Thursday, alleging that it promoted activities against the country.
Official sources indicate that a case has been registered against the publication and its Editor, Anuradha Bhasin, a noted journalist and author. The investigation aims to assess her purported links and actions that allegedly pose a threat to India’s sovereignty.
During the early hours of Thursday, the SIA searched the newspaper’s premises and seized computers. Both the newspaper and its promoters are expected to face questioning in connection with the case.
Maktoob reached out to Bhasin, who is currently outside the country. She reported being informed of the raid by a friend.
In response to the raid, the Editors of Kashmir Times issued a statement condemning the actions taken against the organization. They refuted the allegations that the newspaper was engaged in activities detrimental to the state, describing such claims as baseless and an attempt to silence independent journalism in the region. They asserted, “Criticising the government is not the same as being inimical to the state,” emphasizing that a questioning press “strengthens our nation. It does not weaken it.”
Reports indicate that an FIR has been filed against Bhasin as part of these investigations.
This operation highlights the ongoing crackdown in Kashmir, with the SIA reiterating its position that “there must be no misuse of platforms to propagate seditious or separatist ideologies.”
