New Delhi: Jasmine Paolini secured her first victory over Iga Swiatek at the Wuhan Open quarterfinals on Friday, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. This marks a significant achievement for the Italian, who had faced six consecutive defeats against the six-time Grand Slam champion. The match, which lasted just over 65 minutes, showcased Paolini’s aggressive style as she executed her strategy effectively, committing only three unforced errors. “Oh, really,” she remarked upon learning about her low error count. “Today I stepped on court with clear ideas of what I have to do to try to put her in difficulty. To beat Iga, you have to play amazing. I managed to keep the level from the first shot to the last one. Finally, I won a match. I’m super happy about my level. Just feels amazing.”

In the semifinal, Paolini will face third-ranked Coco Gauff, who advanced after defeating Laura Siegemund with a score of 6-3, 6-0. This marks Gauff’s second consecutive semifinal appearance, following her loss to Amanda Anisimova in the semifinals of the China Open last week.

In the other semifinal matchup, top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka will compete against Jessica Pegula. Sabalenka extended her winning streak at the Wuhan event to 20 matches by defeating eighth-seeded Elena Rybakina 6-3, 6-3. With this victory, she becomes the fourth player since 1990 to win her first 20 main draw matches in a single WTA tournament. Pegula reached the semifinals after a hard-fought three-set win over Kateřina Siniaková, concluding with scores of 2-6, 6-0, 6-3, marking her seventh consecutive victory.
