At 21 years and 329 days old, Bethell took the helm during the first T20I of the three-match series against Ireland in Dublin, marking his debut as England’s skipper.
Bethell’s record surpasses significant historical milestones, following in the footsteps of Monty Bowden, who previously held the title of England’s youngest international captain at 23 years and 144 days during a Test match in 1889. In T20Is, the record was held by Alastair Cook, who was 24 years and 325 days old when he led England against South Africa in 2009.
In the match itself, England triumphed over Ireland by four wickets. Batting first, Ireland set a challenging total of 196 runs. Harry Tector and Lorcan Tucker made substantial contributions, scoring 61 not out and 55 runs, respectively.
