After sharing it with his co-writer Mark Sonnenblick, his excitement was palpable. “I have this melody,” the composer explained, and Sonnenblick’s enthusiastic response confirmed their belief that they had created something special. “When we finished the whole song and the lyrics, we just looked at each other and said, ‘Wow, I think this is a smash.'”
When asked about the components that create a successful track in K-pop or any genre, he outlined the distinctions. “For a K-pop hit, being hooky is definitely important. For a global hit, the concept must resonate universally—everyone understands what ‘Golden’ means,” he remarked. He emphasized that the current societal atmosphere influences how audiences relate to music. “At this time, everyone seeks hope, which is crucial in both K-pop and U.S. markets. A strong concept, an engaging melody, and a compelling message are essential for a hit.”
The discussion also touched on the backdrop of political tension and its impact on the popularity of recent projects, including the film KPop Demon Hunters. “A friend of mine mentioned that his friend’s kids find comfort in it, allowing them to focus on positive aspects despite the dark times,” he said. He highlighted how the project fosters acceptance and love for oneself, flaws included.
