Farida Jalal: A Celebrated Journey Through Bollywood

New Delhi: Veteran actress Farida Jalal is a prominent figure in the Hindi film industry, renowned for her portrayal of motherly characters. Over her illustrious career, she has delivered many unforgettable performances, most notably as Lajwanti ‘Lajjo’ Singh in “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” (DDLJ) and Sayeeda in “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.” These roles have garnered acclaim from both audiences and critics alike.

Farida Jalal began her career in the early 1960s as a child artist, appearing in films such as “Sujata” and “Dosto.” Her notable performances as a child actor in classics like “Ram Aur Shyam,” “Brahmachari,” “Sangam,” and “Phool Aur Patthar” earned her widespread recognition.

In 1967, Jalal made her debut as a lead actress with the family drama “Taqdeer,” which featured actors Bharat Bhushan, Shalini Mardolkar, Dinesh Hingoo, and Kamal Kapoor. Directed by A. Salaam, the film holds an IMDb rating of 6.6, reflecting its positive reception during her teenage years.

Throughout her career, Farida Jalal has appeared in over 200 films, mainly in character roles. After a hiatus between 1983 and 1990, she returned to the screen with the 1991 film “Henna.” This project marked the beginning of a phase where her performances, particularly in motherly roles, became her signature.

In 1969, Jalal shared the screen with legendary actor Rajesh Khanna in the film “Aaradhna,” which also featured Sharmila Tagore and Ashok Kumar. Her contribution to the film was instrumental in its success.

Beyond films, Jalal gained popularity in the television sphere through the hit show “Shararat,” where she played the beloved character ‘Sushma Mehra,’ also known as Nani. The fantasy comedy sitcom aired from 2003 to 2006 and featured actors like Shruti Seth and Karanvir Bohra.

Currently, Farida Jalal is set to appear in the romantic drama “Love in Vietnam,” directed by Rahhat Shah Kazmi. She recently attended the film’s trailer launch alongside a cast that includes Avneet Kaur, Gulshan Grover, Shantanu Maheshwari, and Raj Babbar.
