Ford Motor, the US automaker, has announced its return to the Indian market. The company will be reopening its manufacturing plant in Chennai with the goal of increasing exports. As part of this initiative, Ford plans to hire an additional 2,500-3,000 employees. Kay Hart, President of Ford International Markets Group, stated that this decision reflects the company’s continued commitment to India. Utilizing the manufacturing expertise available in Tamil Nadu, Ford aims to serve new global markets, indicating that the company may not sell its vehicles domestically.

In a recent LinkedIn post, Kay Hart mentioned that Ford has submitted a letter of intent to the Tamil Nadu government, outlining its plans to use the Chennai plant for manufacturing for export purposes. This move follows discussions with the state government, with Ford acknowledging their support throughout the process.

While further details about the type of manufacturing and target export markets are yet to be shared, Ford’s decision marks a significant development following its exit from the Indian market in 2021 due to challenges in sales and financial losses. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has expressed enthusiasm for renewing Ford’s longstanding partnership for global manufacturing, highlighting productive interactions with the Ford Motor team.

Kay Hart emphasized that this decision will lead to an expansion of Ford’s employee base in Chennai. The global Ford Business Solutions team, currently numbering over 12,000 employees, is expected to grow by an additional 2,500 to 3,000 members in the coming years. Additionally, Ford operates an engine manufacturing unit in Sanand, Gujarat, making India its second-largest employee base globally.

This strategic move by Ford signifies a positive step towards revitalizing its presence in the Indian market and leveraging the country’s manufacturing capabilities for international growth.
