The National Investigation Agency (NIA) announced on Sunday that it has arrested a man accused of assisting Dr. Umar Nabi, the medical professional believed to have driven the Hyundai i20 that exploded near the Red Fort metro station on November 10.

The NIA described the arrest as a “major breakthrough” and noted it is the first formal arrest in the ongoing investigation.

The arrested individual has been identified as Amir Rashid Ali from Pampore in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district. According to investigators, Ali traveled to Delhi to facilitate the purchase of the Hyundai i20, which was reportedly converted into a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED). The vehicle is registered in his name, the NIA confirmed.

Ali had previously been detained by the Jammu and Kashmir Police and had remained in their custody since the day of the blast.

The explosion near the Red Fort metro station resulted in 13 fatalities. Two days after the incident, the Union government classified it as a “terrorist incident.”

In addition, the NIA reported that forensic analysis has verified that Dr. Umar Nabi, an assistant professor of medicine at Al-Falah University in Faridabad, Haryana, was indeed driving the vehicle at the time of the explosion. The agency also stated that another vehicle belonging to Dr. Nabi has been seized and is currently undergoing forensic examination.
