CHANDIGARH: In a significant development regarding the alleged suicide of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, the Rohtak police registered an FIR on Wednesday, charging individuals with abetment of suicide and criminal conspiracy. This FIR was filed under Sections 108 (abetment of suicide) and 61 (criminal conspiracy) following a complaint from ASI Sandeep Kumar Lather’s wife, Santosh.
The charges named Puran Kumar’s wife, Amneet P Kumar, an IAS officer from the 2001 batch; her brother, AAP MLA Amit Rattan; and head constable Sushil Kumar, who acted as Puran Kumar’s personal security officer and is presently in jail remand related to a corruption case.
The registration of the FIR occurred shortly after Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini visited Sandeep’s family in Ladhot village, expressing his commitment to delivering justice. At the time of reporting, the FIR had not been publicly released. Officials noted that Sandeep Kumar Lather is believed to have taken his own life on Tuesday, reportedly after implicating Puran Kumar in his final video, accusing him of corruption.
Virendra Badkhalsa, officer on special duty to the Haryana CM, communicated the FIR’s filing to Sandeep’s family, prompting them to agree to an autopsy. Previously, the family had withheld consent, demanding action against DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, who were mentioned in Puran Kumar’s suicide note. Sandeep’s body, which had been kept in a hired freezer, was then taken to PGI-MS Rohtak, while Puran Kumar’s body was cremated in Chandigarh, about 230 kilometers away, following an eight-day standoff.
Sandeep was part of the investigation team concerning Puran Kumar and had previously participated in the arrest of Puran Kumar’s former personal security officer on October 5. Reports suggest that Puran Kumar’s suicide was triggered by the investigation that followed the filing of that FIR.
