Eighteen members of a single family from Hyderabad, spanning three generations and including nine children, were among the 45 Indian Umrah pilgrims who tragically lost their lives in a bus crash near Madina, Saudi Arabia.
Mohammed Asif, a resident of Ramnagar, expressed his devastation as he confirmed the loss of his father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, his wife, and three children in the incident. The bus collided with a diesel tanker and caught fire in the early hours of Monday. “My sister-in-law, brother-in-law, their son, three daughters, and their children went for Umrah. They left eight days ago. They had completed Umrah and were returning to Medina. Around 1:30 am, the accident happened… the bus was destroyed in the fire. They were supposed to return on Saturday,” Asif told NDTV.
The deceased included Naseeruddin (70), his wife Akhter Begum (62), their son Salauddin (42), and daughters Amina (44), Rizwana (38), and Shabana (40), along with their children. As news reached their home in Ramnagar, grief overtook the family; a neighbor brought the keys to the house as Naseeruddin’s sister fell into tears, lamenting, “My brother’s entire family has been wiped out.”
In response to the tragedy, the Telangana government announced several measures, including financial compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of each deceased pilgrim. A delegation led by the Minister for Minorities Welfare, Azher Uddin, is to visit Saudi Arabia to coordinate with local authorities. Additionally, the government will sponsor two members from each bereaved family to travel to Saudi Arabia for the last rites.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar reported that 45 of the 46 passengers on board died at the scene, with the only survivor, Md Abdul Shoaib, currently hospitalized in critical condition following the crash, which occurred approximately 25 kilometers before Medina.
The group had a planned travel itinerary from November 9 to 23. Out of the 54 original pilgrims, four traveled ahead in a separate vehicle while another four remained in Mecca, leaving 46 passengers on the bus at the time of the accident. The travelers represented multiple travel groups, including Al Makkah (15), Baab Ul Harmain (21), Hafsa (5), and Mahmood Bhaijaan (4). Among the pilgrims, 28 were women and 17 were men.
