Devon Conway Released by Chennai Super Kings Ahead of IPL 2026 Retention
New Delhi: Devon Conway has confirmed his release from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) prior to the IPL 2026 retention announcement set for Saturday, November 15. The New Zealand cricketer played three seasons with the franchise after he made his IPL debut in 2022.
In a statement on his X account, Conway expressed gratitude to the CSK fans for their unwavering support during his time with the team. “Thank you to all loyal fans of CSK for amazing 3 years support,” he wrote.
Conway debuted in the IPL with CSK in 2022, scoring 252 runs in seven innings at an average of 42 and a strike rate of 145.66, including three half-centuries. His standout performance occurred in IPL 2023, where he scored 672 runs in 15 innings at an average of 51.69 and a strike rate nearing 140, registering six fifties. He finished the season as the third-highest run-scorer, trailing behind Shubman Gill, who won the orange cap.
After missing the entirety of IPL 2024, Conway returned to CSK in the mega auction for ₹6.25 crore. However, his performance in IPL 2025 fell short of expectations, as he accumulated only 156 runs in six innings at an average of 26 and a strike rate of 131.09. With his release from CSK, Conway will seek a new team, marking his potential first time playing for another franchise in the IPL.
Potential Additional Releases from CSK
Chennai Super Kings experienced a challenging IPL 2025 season, prompting a reevaluation of their squad ahead of the auction. In addition to Conway, the franchise is expected to release players including Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda, Rachin Ravindra, Vijay Shankar, and Jamie Overton. Reports of trades involving Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to the Rajasthan Royals in exchange for Sanju Samson have also emerged, indicating a significant transformation for CSK ahead of IPL 2026, contingent on their auction selections.
