The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Wednesday expressed concerns over alleged “vote chori” (vote theft) via voter list manipulation rather than through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The party indicated it would legally challenge the final Special Intensive Revision (SIR) list if it contains any discrepancies.
TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee led a ten-member delegation that met with the Election Commission of India to discuss these concerns. “The truth is clear: votes are not being stolen through EVMs; they are being stolen through the manipulation of voter lists,” Banerjee stated following the meeting.
The ruling party in West Bengal highlighted the issue of 1.36 crore voters marked for “logical discrepancies” in the draft voter list, demanding formal hearings regarding this matter. Banerjee mentioned that the delegation raised multiple questions about the draft list but did not receive satisfactory answers from the Election Commission.
He stated, “Apart from two or three basic questions, he (Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar) failed to answer any of the questions we raised… Queries on the SIR were repeatedly diverted to citizenship issues, while questions on deletions were met with procedural responses such as filling Form 7, without any concrete explanation.”
Banerjee further described the Chief Election Commissioner as “aggressive” during their discussion. “When we began speaking, he started losing his temper… I said you are nominated; I am elected… If he has the guts, he should release the footage… if he has the courage… he should face the media and rebut whatever point I am making,” he remarked.
In his critique, Banerjee alleged that Gyanesh Kumar was assigned to undermine the nation. “Who heads the Union Ministry of Cooperation? Amit Shah. And who served as his secretary? Gyanesh Kumar. The same Gyanesh Kumar now sits in the chair of the Chief Election Commissioner. Coincidence? Or a carefully scripted design?”
Banerjee affirmed that West Bengal would not tolerate the disenfranchisement or humiliation of its voters under the pretext of administrative exercises. The TMC delegation included Rajya Sabha leader Derek O’Brien, MPs Saket Gokhale, Ritabrata Banerjee, and Mamata Thakur, alongside West Bengal ministers Manas Bhunia, Pradip Mazumdar, and Chandrima Bhattacharya.
The TMC leaders reiterated that “democracy cannot survive voter list engineering” following their meeting with the Election Commission in Delhi.
