A Delhi Court has granted interim bail to Umar Khalid, a prominent anti-CAA activist, in connection with the larger conspiracy case regarding the Delhi violence. The bail allows Khalid to attend his sister’s wedding and will be effective from December 16 to December 29.
Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of Karkardooma Courts approved the interim bail on the condition that Khalid furnish a personal bond of ₹20,000, along with two sureties of the same amount. The court has stipulated that Khalid must refrain from contacting any witnesses or individuals related to the case, as reported by Live Law.
Having spent over five years in custody, Khalid is required to provide his mobile number to the investigating officer and ensure it remains accessible throughout the duration of the interim bail. The court’s order specifies that during this time, Khalid is prohibited from using social media and is permitted only to meet family members, relatives, and friends. He is also instructed to remain at his home or at the locations of the marriage ceremonies he has identified.
Last December, Khalid was granted temporary bail for seven days to attend a family wedding, and in 2022, he was similarly allowed a week of bail for his sister’s marriage ceremony.
On a related note, the Supreme Court has reserved its judgment on bail applications filed by Khalid, along with Sharjeel Imam, Gulfisha Fatima, and other human rights advocates implicated in the Delhi violence conspiracy case.
