A 50-year-old Dalit farmer named Devkinandan Paswan died following an alleged assault by his neighbor and relatives in Malikpur village, located in Kanpur Dehat district, Uttar Pradesh. Police confirmed the incident on Monday.
Authorities have arrested six individuals in connection with the case, including the main suspect, Govind Singh, and his wife. The incident unfolded on Sunday evening when Singh reportedly visited Paswan’s home while intoxicated and began verbally abusing him over a minor dispute. The situation escalated into a heated argument when Paswan and his wife, Mamta, confronted Singh.
According to police reports, Singh’s wife contacted her brother and other relatives from Kanpur district, who subsequently joined the confrontation and allegedly assaulted both Paswan and his wife, inflicting severe injuries. Their daughter, Gomti, attempted to document the incident on her mobile device, but the accused allegedly confiscated her phone and discarded it.
Upon receiving a report of the altercation, police arrived at the scene and transported the injured individuals to a nearby hospital. Due to the critical nature of their injuries, they were later referred to a facility in Kanpur. Unfortunately, Paswan’s condition deteriorated, and he succumbed to his injuries Monday evening.
Following Paswan’s death, Gomti filed a formal complaint at the Shivli police station against Govind Singh, his wife, and several unidentified accomplices. An FIR was registered, alleging assault and other charges. In light of Paswan’s death, police are reclassifying the case as a murder.
Station House Officer Praveen Kumar Singh reported the arrest of six suspects, including those named in the FIR, and confirmed that all will appear in court on Tuesday. In response to local unrest, a significant police presence has been deployed in the village, which consists of a mixed demographic, to ensure public safety and prevent further incidents.
This event is the latest in a string of violent incidents against Dalits in the region. Earlier in April, a 35-year-old Dalit farmer named Devi Shankar was allegedly murdered by upper-caste Hindu men in a separate incident in Isota Lohagpur village, Prayagraj district.
