Fasting is a practice that many Indians are familiar with, whether it’s for religious, political, detox, or trendy reasons. John Oakes, a fasting enthusiast and author, views fasting as a journey towards empowerment and strength, helping individuals to find their center. According to him, fasting allows individuals to retain a sense of agency, even in challenging situations.

Oakes became interested in fasting during the first term of US President Donald Trump, as fasting helped him cope with the overwhelming political climate. He extensively researched fasting by consulting with doctors, sports nutritionists, and delving into medical literature.

In his book titled “The Fast: The history, science, philosophy, and promise of doing without”, Oakes uncovers intriguing information about fasting. He discusses how cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy are often advised to eat to maintain energy levels. Surprisingly, studies have shown that fasting can make the body more receptive to chemotherapy and increase the effectiveness of treatment.

Oakes emphasizes the importance of finding one’s own rhythm when it comes to fasting, rather than following a strict set of rules. He suggests setting goals to gradually reduce certain elements from daily life and then reintroduce them as needed. He highlights the benefits of giving the body a break through fasting, likening it to a vacation to explore new possibilities.

Ultimately, Oakes’s message is clear: fasting can be a powerful tool for self-discovery and well-being. By understanding the benefits of fasting and listening to our bodies, we can embark on a journey of physical and mental rejuvenation.
