A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and several associates have been charged with the murder of a farmer and the assault of his daughters in Ganeshpura village, Madhya Pradesh.
The incident occurred as the farmer, Ram Swaroop Dhakad, was heading to his field accompanied by his wife. According to the police, BJP leader Mahendra Nagar and his accomplices ambushed Dhakad, assaulting him with sticks and rods before running over his body with a Thar jeep.
Family members have claimed that Nagar had previously threatened local farmers to sell their land and that Dhakad’s refusal provoked the attack. Reports indicate that when Dhakad’s daughters arrived at the scene responding to their parents’ cries for help, they, too, were assaulted.
One of the daughters recounted, “I went to save my father. They sat on top of me, assaulted me, and even tore my clothes. They also shot at me.” She described how their parents were attacked while on their way to the farm. As their mother attempted to intervene, the assailants reportedly ran the vehicle over Dhakad.
Ramkumar, Dhakad’s brother, alleged that the assault on the daughters lasted nearly an hour, during which their clothes were torn while around 20 individuals fired gunshots into the air, instilling fear among witnesses. “They continued the assault for around an hour. The accused then ran a tractor over him and later a car,” he stated.
Local police have indicated that Dhakad was prevented from receiving medical attention for nearly an hour, with his body allegedly guarded by the attackers at gunpoint. When he was finally transported to a district hospital, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
An FIR has been filed against Mahendra Nagar, along with three women relatives and 14 others, under murder and several other charges. Fatehgarh Station House Officer Jayanarayan Sharma stated, “Statements from the victim’s family have been recorded, and raids are underway to apprehend the accused.”
Residents of Ganeshpura noted that Nagar has a history of intimidating small farmers, compelling roughly 25 of them to sell their land at under market value and leave the village.
