In a significant shift, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has declared that it will withdraw from the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. This announcement comes just two days after JMM had revealed intentions to contest independently on six seats.

JMM leader Sudeep Kumar Sonu made the announcement during a press conference held in Giridih, Jharkhand. He criticized the INDIA alliance partners, particularly the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), for failing to honor what he termed coalition “dharma.”

“With deep regret, JMM is compelled to say that we are not participating in the Bihar Assembly elections this time,” Sonu stated, expressing disappointment over the RJD’s alleged disregard for its allies. He remarked, “Where an important ally of the INDIA alliance has been prevented from contesting, there must be reasons, but we hold the RJD leadership fully responsible for this situation.”

Sonu also implicated the Congress in the current predicament, claiming they failed to secure JMM’s participation in the seat-sharing negotiations. According to JMM, they had previously identified 28 constituencies in Bihar with substantial tribal populations, noting that they had narrowly lost 22 of those seats in past elections.

“We informed Tejashwi Yadav about these 28 seats in Bihar where tribal voters are significant. JMM had the potential to sway ST votes toward the INDIA alliance and help convert these seats,” he added.

Sonu clarified that JMM will now refrain from active campaigning or any political activities in Bihar. He further alleged that the treatment JMM received this time constituted “disrespect and serious political ill-treatment,” despite the party’s history of compromising to support its partners in prior elections.

“We have been cooperative allies, even shifting our seats in past elections to help others,” Sonu asserted. “But what is happening in Bihar feels more like political neglect than alliance spirit.”
