A Hindu man was lynched in Mymensingh district, Bangladesh, on Thursday night, following accusations of blasphemy amid ongoing unrest in the country. The victim, identified as 25-year-old Dipu Chandra Das, who worked in a local factory, was reportedly beaten to death by a mob. According to the duty officer at Bhaluka police station, his body was subsequently tied to a tree and set on fire.

Local police recovered Das’ remains and transported them to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Muhammad Yunus, the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, expressed his condemnation of the violent act. In a statement, he emphasized, “There is no space for such violence in new Bangladesh,” and assured that the perpetrators of this “heinous crime” would not be spared.

Mia Golam Porwar, Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and a former Member of Parliament, also condemned the incident, stating that the killing stemmed from allegations of insulting Islam and making derogatory remarks about the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He underscored that such actions contradict Bangladesh’s laws, affirming that Islam does not condone extrajudicial killings or mob violence. “If there are allegations, their resolution must be carried out through the courts—this is a fundamental principle of the rule of law,” he added. Porwar called for a thorough and impartial investigation into Das’ death and demanded that the offenders face justice.

This incident comes during a period of significant unrest in Bangladesh, triggered by the recent death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, who succumbed to gunshot wounds in a Singaporean hospital. Hadi, a key figure in the 2024 student protests, played a prominent role in the movement that led to the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government.
