Backlash Against BJP Assam’s Islamophobic AI Video Sparks Controversy

A video shared on the official X account of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Assam unit has sparked significant backlash, with critics accusing the party of promoting anti-Muslim sentiment and inciting communal tensions.

The AI-generated video, which was posted on @BJP4Assam, portrays Muslims across various regions of the state as illegal immigrants who are purportedly encroaching on government land. Social media users have condemned the content as inflammatory, raising concerns about its potential to incite violence against the Muslim community in Assam.

“This is so disturbing, so hateful, so xenophobic, and so genocidal in its own way. This is not normal politics. It’s abhorrent and disgusting,” commented X user Tanpreet Sehgal. “How can it be acceptable for the official social media handle of the ruling party to dehumanize and dog-whistle minorities like this?”

Prominent journalist Parth MN labeled the video “a new low” for the BJP. Critics have drawn parallels between this post and a previous campaign advertisement from the BJP’s Jharkhand unit, which depicted alleged Muslim migrants taking over a family home. The Election Commission subsequently ordered its removal, deeming it “communal, malicious and misleading.”

Writer Farzana Versey criticized the BJP Assam account for “demonizing Muslims and projecting citizens as occupiers.” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has a history of controversial remarks regarding Muslims, claiming that they will surpass Hindus in population by 2041 and asserting that the state government is evicting “illegal settlers” from substantial land areas since May 2021. He has stated, “all these people who have encroached upon our land are from one religion.”

Journalist Indradeep Bhattacharyya responded to the video by stating, “You have to reach an extreme state of degeneration to do what Assam BJP has been doing. India has normalized politics of hate under the present regime, but even by that standard, what Assam BJP is doing to seek votes is sickening and horrifying. History will remember this.”

The @BJP4Assam handle has been known for posting content targeting Muslims and opposition figures, including Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi.

In light of the video, opposition parties and civil society groups have urged the judiciary and authorities to take action against the BJP’s Assam unit and demand the video’s removal.
