Mumbai: Veteran Bollywood actor Govardhan Asrani, widely known as Asrani, passed away at the age of 84 at Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Mumbai on Monday at 3 PM, according to family sources. The cause of death has not been disclosed. “Veteran Actor & Director Govardhan Asrani (popularly known as Asrani) passed away at Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Mumbai. He was cremated at Shastri Nagar crematorium in Santacruz later in the evening, attended by close family and friends,” stated Babubhai Thiba, Asrani’s manager.

Asrani gained fame for his role as the jailer in the iconic film Sholay. His career spanned over 350 Hindi films, featuring in successful titles like Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Dhamaal, Bunty Aur Babli 2, R… Rajkumar, All The Best, and Welcome, among others.

The news of Asrani’s death has sent shockwaves through the Bollywood industry, particularly as he shared Diwali 2025 wishes on his Instagram story earlier that day. Family sources mentioned that Asrani had been in declining health for some time. His last rites were conducted quietly at the Shastri Nagar crematorium, adhering to his desire for minimal commotion after his passing. Reports indicate that Asrani had instructed his wife, Manju Asrani, not to publicize his death, leading to a discreet farewell.

Known for his comedic talent and unique performance style, Asrani captivated audiences from his role as the jailer to appearances in films such as Chupke Chupke, Aa Ab Laut Chalen, and Hera Pheri. Throughout his long career, he secured a special place in the hearts of fans.

Besides his notable role in Sholay, Asrani was a frequent collaborator with superstar Rajesh Khanna, appearing in over 25 films between 1972 and 1991. His performances in beloved comedies like Chupke Chupke, Chhoti Si Baat, and Rafoo Chakkar earned him multiple accolades, including two Filmfare Awards for Best Comedian.

Asrani’s extensive career, which began in the late 1960s, is characterized by his versatility, having acted in various genres for over five decades. The 1970s marked a peak period in his career, during which he emerged as a prominent character actor, appearing in classics like Mere Apne, Koshish, Bawarchi, Parichay, Abhimaan, Chupke Chupke, Chhoti Si Baat, and Rafoo Chakkar. His ability to seamlessly transition between lead, supporting, and character roles solidified his reputation as one of India’s leading comedians.

Today, Hindi cinema mourns the loss of an actor who brought laughter and joy to audiences through his remarkable performances.
