Three male students from a government college in Madhya Pradesh, including a local leader of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), have been arrested for allegedly recording female students while they were changing clothes ahead of a campus youth festival.
The incident occurred on Tuesday during a cultural event at a college located in Mandsaur district. Police reported that CCTV footage appeared to show four men entering a room and taking photos and videos of female students preparing for performances.
The acting principal of the college noticed the suspicious activity and promptly alerted the police, filing a formal complaint. Authorities identified the arrested individuals as Umesh Joshi, Ajay Gaud, and Himanshu Bairagi, aged between 20 and 22, while a fourth suspect remains at large. Umesh Joshi serves as the ABVP’s city secretary but has been removed from his position following the incident.
In response to the allegations, the ABVP defended its members, asserting that their actions stemmed from “checking out of suspicion.” ABVP national secretary Shalini Verma stated, “This simple, doubt-driven act was misrepresented… the room in question was not a girls’ common room. When some female students mistakenly assumed that photos or videos had been taken, they informed the principal, who then checked the CCTV footage and notified the police. The police took three students to the station, examined their mobile phones, but no photos, videos, or any inappropriate material were found.”
Currently, the police have initiated further investigations into the matter.
