In a significant move for India’s electric vehicle landscape, Tata Motors has launched the all-new Tata Sierra EV, starting at Rs 18.79 lakh (ex-showroom). This electric SUV aims to compete against emerging models like the Mahindra BE 6 and Hyundai Creta Electric, offering features that cater to both adventure seekers and urban drivers.

Power and Performance Options

The Tata Sierra EV is built on Tata’s innovative Acti.ev+ platform, which it shares with the Harrier EV while maintaining the iconic Sierra aesthetic. The vehicle is available in two battery options—a 63kWh pack and a larger 75kWh option. For those opting for the standard models, the Sierra EV will feature rear-wheel drive, whereas the dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) variant provides an impressive 504Nm of torque. Additionally, the Sierra is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.8 seconds, reinforcing its performance credentials.

The battery range is commendable, with the 75kWh variant offering up to 665km (MIDC-certified) while the 63kWh version delivers up to 565km. Rapid charging capabilities are also a highlight; under optimal conditions, the vehicle can gain 263km of range in just 15 minutes using 120kW DC fast charging. Charging from 20% to 80% takes around 26 minutes, making the vehicle practical for daily use. Furthermore, Tata Motors includes a 15-year battery warranty, enhancing consumer confidence.

Off-Road Capabilities and Advanced Features

The Sierra EV is not just an urban utility vehicle; it boasts off-road capabilities with its AWD version, making it a suitable choice for adventure enthusiasts. Key features include six terrain modes, low-speed cruise control, and an advanced 540-degree surround camera system with an underbody view for improved maneuverability in rough terrains. Enhanced traction management further supports driving in challenging conditions.

Luxurious and Feature-Rich Interior

Inside, the Tata Sierra EV offers a premium cabin experience, packed with high-end features. The dashboard features a triple-screen setup, complemented by a 12-speaker JBL audio system. Comfort features include a panoramic sunroof, ventilated and powered front seats, dual-zone climate control, and ambient lighting. Moreover, the vehicle comes with several high-tech capabilities like a heads-up display, connected car technology, and over-the-air (OTA) software updates. Safety is also a priority, with six airbags standard across all models.

The cargo space is generous, offering 622 litres, which expands to 1,257 litres with the rear seats folded down, making it an excellent option for families and active lifestyles.

What This Means

The launch of the Tata Sierra EV signifies a strategic effort by Tata Motors to strengthen its position in the fast-growing Indian electric SUV market. With increasing interest in EV adoption amid rising fuel prices and environmental concerns, the Sierra EV presents itself as a versatile option balancing performance, range, and features. Its pricing positions it competitively against other electric offerings, inviting a broader section of consumers to consider electric mobility as a viable alternative.
