Tata Motors is poised to significantly expand its electric SUV offerings in India with the launch of the Sierra EV and Safari EV. These new models come in response to intensifying competition in the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market, where established brands like Mahindra, Hyundai, and Maruti Suzuki, alongside international players, are also ramping up their electric vehicle strategies.

Tata Sierra EV: Launch Details and Market Positioning

The Tata Sierra EV is set to launch between July and September 2023. This model will strategically fill the gap between Tata’s existing Curvv EV and the more premium Harrier EV, showcasing Tata’s commitment to an expansive electric lineup. With rivals like the Hyundai Creta Electric, Maruti e-Vitara, and Mahindra BE 6 also targeting the same segment, the Sierra EV aims to carve out a unique position by appealing to a tech-savvy and environmentally conscious consumer base.

Performance, Range, and Key Features

Built on Tata’s innovative Acti.ev+ platform, the Sierra EV promises enhanced cabin space, smarter battery integration, and improved energy efficiency. It’s anticipated that buyers will have two battery options: a 55kWh variant from the Curvv EV and a robust 65kWh pack sourced from the Harrier EV. Tata claims a maximum range of 540 to 600 kilometers under optimal conditions, although real-world usage is expected to yield closer to 400–450 kilometers.

Notable features of the Sierra EV include:

  • Level 2+ Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS)
  • Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capabilities
  • Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) charging technology
  • 360-degree surround-view camera for enhanced safety
  • A modern triple-screen dashboard layout

The cabin will be equipped with a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, an equally large passenger display, and a 10-inch digital display for the driver, highlighting Tata’s focus on a connected and user-friendly interior.

Tata Safari EV: Anticipated Launch and Specifications

Following the Sierra EV, Tata intends to unveil the Safari EV by Diwali 2023. Positioned as Tata’s flagship electric SUV, the Safari EV will compete directly with Mahindra’s XEV 9S. Riding on the same Acti.ev+ platform as its sibling, it will offer two battery choices: a 65kWh battery for entry-level variants and a larger 75kWh option for higher trims.

The Safari EV promises around 600 kilometers of range on paper, with realistic expectations sitting between 450–500 kilometers during daily use. Basic models will feature rear-wheel drive, while higher-end versions will introduce dual motors for all-wheel drive. Tata is also proposing dedicated modes for off-road and adverse weather conditions, showcasing the vehicle’s adaptability in various scenarios.

What This Means

The upcoming launches of the Sierra EV and Safari EV signify a critical shift in Tata Motors’ strategy as it reinforces its position in the growing Indian electric SUV market. As interest in electric vehicles increases amid rising concerns about air quality and climate change, Tata’s new offerings align with government initiatives promoting sustainable transportation. Moreover, with more affordable options entering the market, consumers are likely to have an increasing number of choices, making EVs more accessible to a wider demographic.
