Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday emphasized the importance of taking precautions amid escalating temperatures and severe heatwave conditions affecting various regions of India. Through a series of social media posts, he encouraged citizens to stay hydrated, carry water when going out, and support those impacted by the extreme heat.
He stated, “Temperatures are continuously rising in different parts of the country, and along with this, the many difficulties caused by the heat in daily life are also increasing. I urge all my fellow citizens to take as many precautions as possible.” The Prime Minister’s warnings were timely, coinciding with alerts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicating that many areas in Central and Northwest India are expected to experience heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in the coming days.
PM Modi warned against overlooking symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, and fatigue, which could lead to heatstroke if not addressed. “If someone around you suddenly feels faint, experiences weakness, or appears unwell, immediately take them to a cool and shaded place. Give them water, ORS, or other fluids to provide relief to the body. Children, the elderly, and people working in the sun are the most affected during this scorching heat. If not addressed in time, this condition can turn into a serious problem like heatstroke. In such times, your vigilance and care can save a life,” he advised.
He also urged citizens to check on elderly family members, keep them hydrated, and avoid exposing them to the afternoon heat. “Whenever possible, make it a point to call your parents, grandparents, maternal grandparents, and other loved ones to inquire about their well-being,” he added. The Prime Minister further called on individuals to place water for birds and animals outside their homes and shops, stating, “In these difficult days, let us look after one another with complete sensitivity and compassion.”
The IMD has issued a severe heatwave warning for the Delhi-NCR region, forecasting maximum temperatures to reach 45 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. However, some relief may be on the horizon, as thunderstorms and rainfall are expected in parts of Delhi-NCR starting from May 29.
Severe heatwave conditions are also reported across several states, including areas in Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh, as well as isolated regions in East Uttar Pradesh and East Madhya Pradesh. Furthermore, heatwave conditions have been observed in sections of Uttarakhand, Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar, Odisha, Telangana, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
