Cuban electrical and petroleum workers gathered in Havana on International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day, to celebrate their dedication amidst escalating U.S. sanctions that are straining the economy. Ninety-four-year-old former leader Raúl Castro and President Miguel Díaz-Canel participated in the festivities while the U.S. government, under President Donald Trump, announced additional sanctions targeting security services and supporters of the Cuban government. The White House asserted, without presenting evidence, that Cuba acts as a “safe haven for transnational terrorist groups,” including Hezbollah. With an ongoing energy blockade significantly impacting the nation’s economy and causing widespread blackouts, Yunier Merino Reyes, an accountant with the Electric Union, highlighted the persistent efforts to provide electricity to the population. Milagros Morales, a 34-year-old Havana resident who joined the march, emphasized the determination of the Cuban people to defend their homeland, underscoring the spirit of resilience amidst adversity.
