Rajat Patidar’s dismissal during the match against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad has triggered significant reactions from Virat Kohli, the star batter and captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The incident occurred when Patidar attempted to pull a delivery from Arshad Khan, resulting in a top edge that directed the ball towards deep backward square leg. West Indies international Jason Holder made a notable diving catch while charging to his right, catching the ball close to the ground.
Following the catch, there was immediate uncertainty regarding the decision. The umpires referred the decision to the third umpire, and although replays indicated the ball may have brushed the ground as Holder completed the catch, the original decision stood. Kohli was visibly upset with the review process from the sidelines, as he had already been dismissed earlier in the innings after a promising start. His animated response near the dugout reflected his dissatisfaction with how the situation was handled. RCB’s head coach, Andy Flower, was also seen discussing the decision with an umpire, indicating team confoundment. Ultimately, Patidar was forced to leave the field, having scored 19 runs off 15 balls.
Patidar’s wicket fell at a critical juncture in the innings. He has been a pivotal component of RCB’s middle order this season, and his exit disrupted the team’s momentum at a time when they were attempting to build a solid foundation. With a few early wickets lost, Patidar’s contributions were crucial, further complicating the match dynamics.
Throughout the season, Bengaluru’s top four batters have performed admirably, with players like Tim David and Romario Shepherd providing significant contributions during chases. However, the middle order for RCB has faced challenges in meeting expectations, raising concerns as the season approaches its final stages. In the game against Gujarat, Jitesh Sharma scored just one run, Tim David registered nine, and Krunal Pandya managed four. The team resorted to using Venkatesh Iyer as the Impact Player, yet he, too, struggled to make an impact so far this season.
