The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a significant victory in the recent civic elections, securing a sweeping majority across all 15 municipal corporations. This election took place in the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, with the BJP surpassing the 50% threshold in each corporation.

Polling was conducted on Sunday for a wide-scale electoral process that included not only the municipal corporations but also 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats, and 260 taluka panchayats. The elections, viewed as one of the most extensive exercises leading up to next year’s Assembly elections, encompassed nearly 9,200 seats and involved over 41.8 million eligible voters.

According to the State Election Commission (SEC), the voter turnout was recorded at 55.1% in municipal corporations, 65.53% in municipalities, 66.64% in district panchayats, and 67.26% in taluka panchayats. Among the municipal corporations, the newly established Gandhidham in Kutch district experienced the lowest turnout at 46.03%, while Vapi in Valsad district achieved the highest at 72.29%. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation noted a turnout of 51.81%.

This election marked the first polling in nine newly formed municipal corporations, including Navsari, Gandhidham, Morbi, Vapi, Anand, Nadiad, Mehsana, Porbandar, and Surendranagar. The elections were conducted under revised regulations regarding Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservations, necessitating comprehensive delimitation and restructuring of wards across several districts.

The principal contenders in these elections were the BJP, Congress, and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) also fielding candidates in various constituencies.
