New Delhi: Bayern Munich, in pursuit of a treble, will face reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semifinal. The first leg of this two-legged matchup is scheduled for April 28 (April 29, IST) at the Parc des Princes in Paris. Bayern is unbeaten in any competition since January 24 and advanced to the semifinals after defeating Real Madrid 6-4 on aggregate, including a 4-3 win in the second leg. PSG made their way to the semifinals with a commanding 4-0 aggregate victory over Liverpool.
The Bavarians are aiming for a treble after securing the Bundesliga title and reaching the German Cup final. A place in the Champions League final would provide Bayern Munich an opportunity to contend for Europe’s top honor.
Bayern’s Strategy Against Kvaratskhelia
A crucial aspect of Bayern’s strategy will involve their defense against PSG winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The Georgian international has scored eight goals, outperforming teammate Ousmane Dembélé, who is the current men’s Ballon d’Or holder. PSG coach Luis Enrique emphasized Kvaratskhelia’s significance, stating, “He is such an important player for us, not just for his abilities but for what he transmits as a player.” The 25-year-old’s performance against Liverpool featured dynamic runs and exquisite footwork, drawing comparisons to the legendary George Best for his dribbling and flair, and to Thierry Henry for his ability to score from cutting in at pace.
Kvaratskhelia acknowledged the importance of preparation, saying, “When I come inside and shoot, it is down to hard work. It depends on our opponents as well. I also work on it with the national team.”
Bayern Adapting Without Manager Kompany
Bayern must also adjust to the absence of head coach Vincent Kompany, suspended for the semifinal due to a yellow card accumulation during the match against Real Madrid. Assistant coach Aaron Danks will take charge. Kompany was present at training before the Paris match, but he will not be on the sidelines. Forward Harry Kane remarked, “We’ll miss him on the touchline. He’s our boss, a coach who’d love to be out there with us.”
PSG’s Full Strength and Midfield Battle
For PSG, Luis Enrique expressed optimism about fielding a full-strength squad, suggesting that midfielder Vitinha could start after missing the last two league games. “It’ll be a lottery. Everyone’s ready,” he mentioned during a pregame conference. Vitinha’s partnership with João Neves and returning Fabián Ruiz is crucial in a midfield battle featuring arguably the two strongest lineups in the competition.
Bayern Munich is noted for its blend of physical strength, tactical discipline, and precise passing, with players like Joshua Kimmich, Aleksandar Pavlović, and Leon Goretzka leading the charge. Complemented by the creativity of Michael Olise and the finishing prowess of Harry Kane, Bayern aims to dictate play. Luis Díaz, who scored twice in Bayern’s 2-1 victory in Paris earlier this season, provides additional attacking firepower.
Control in midfield will be essential for both teams, especially to prevent Bayern from dominating as they did against Real Madrid and in previous encounters with PSG.
