India’s renowned photographer, Raghu Rai, passed away on the morning of April 26, 2026, at a private hospital at the age of 83 after a prolonged battle with cancer.

His daughter, Avani Kaur Rai, is continuing his photographic legacy while also pursuing a career in the film industry. Avani recently appeared alongside veteran actors Dharmendra and Jaideep Ahlawat in the film Ikkis, which was released on January 1, 2026. It is noteworthy that this film represents Dharmendra’s final role.

In Ikkis, Avani portrayed Saba, the daughter of Brigadier Jan Mohammad Nisar, played by Jaideep Ahlawat. Besides her role in Ikkis, she has also acted as the lead in a short film titled Two Sisters and a Husband.

In addition to photography and acting, Avani Rai has established herself as a filmmaker. She produced a documentary titled Raghu Rai: An Unframed Portrait, which runs for 55 minutes and was directed by Avani herself. The documentary provides a closer look at her father’s work, philosophy, and life, allowing viewers to gain insight into his creative process.

Raghu Rai was a celebrated figure in photography, recognized with the Padma Shri award in 1972 by the Government of India for his significant contributions during the Bangladesh War. He is survived by his wife, Gurmeet Sangha Rai, and their children: Nitin, Lagan, Avani, and Purvai.
