Sunrisers Hyderabad Halts Chennai Super Kings’ Momentum in IPL 2026

New Delhi, April 18 — In an enthralling match on Saturday, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) interrupted the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) winning streak in the Indian Premier League 2026. The fast bowlers showcased exceptional performances as SRH defended a total of 194 runs, securing their third victory of the season while denying CSK a chance at their third consecutive win.

Batting first, SRH recorded a score of 194 for 9 in 20 overs on a pitch that started strong but displayed signs of sluggishness later. Abhishek Sharma provided a dynamic start with a rapid 59 runs off 22 balls, while Travis Head managed a modest 23 runs from 20 deliveries. Heinrich Klaasen played a crucial innings in the middle overs, contributing 59 runs off 39 balls. Despite a brisk powerplay where SRH reached 75 for 4, CSK’s bowlers, Anshul Kamboj and Jamie Overton, were effective, each claiming three wickets, and Mukesh Choudhary added two more, leaving SRH just short of the 200-run mark.

CSK’s response began with a strong partnership of 51 runs for the second wicket between Ayush Mhatre and Ruturaj Gaikwad, following the early dismissal of Sanju Samson by Nitish Kumar Reddy. The momentum shifted when Reddy dismissed Mhatre for 30 runs. Eshan Malinga then struck, removing Gaikwad on his very first ball of the match, as he edged behind to the wicketkeeper.

With Sarfaraz Ahmed and Matthew Short aiming to stabilize CSK’s innings, further setbacks followed. Sarfaraz was dismissed for 25 in the 11th over, shortly before Dewald Brevis also fell, leaving CSK in a precarious position at 113 for 5 after 11.4 overs. The required run rate climbed above 10 runs per over, and boundaries became elusive, with 28 deliveries elapsing without a boundary.

Eshan Malinga, Praful Hinge, and Sakib Hussain effectively subdued the CSK batting order in the latter half of the innings. Eshan claimed Short’s wicket, while Sakib dismissed Shivam Dube, further complicating CSK’s chase. Eshan emerged as the standout bowler, returning figures of 3 for 29, supported by Nitish Reddy’s 2 for 31.

Jamie Overton and Anshul Kamboj attempted to accelerate the scoring but ultimately fell short, with Overton scoring 16 runs from 15 balls and Kamboj contributing 13 runs off 8 balls. CSK ultimately succumbed to a 10-run defeat, falling short of the target as SRH took charge of the match.
