Digital Gold and ETFs Surge in Popularity on Akshaya Tritiya Amid Rising Prices

As Akshaya Tritiya approaches, a significant shift towards modern gold investment options such as ETFs, digital gold, and derivatives is becoming evident, alongside traditional physical purchases. Analysts point to the evolving landscape of investor participation on this auspicious occasion, typically marked by gold buying.

“Investors are increasingly turning to flexible and transparent gold investment avenues, even as physical purchases remain essential during Akshaya Tritiya,” stated Manav Modi, Analyst Commodities at Motilal Oswal Financial Services. This reflects a broader trend towards modern financial instruments related to gold.

According to a recent report from the brokerage, bullion markets have experienced volatility amid geopolitical tensions, sluggish global growth, and changing expectations regarding monetary policy. Despite these fluctuations, gold and silver have appreciated approximately 10% and 5% respectively year-to-date, attributed to persistent safe-haven demand. This trend is anticipated to continue as convenience and liquidity become priorities for investors.

In the domestic market, high gold prices have suppressed demand for jewelry, making it sensitive to price changes. The report emphasizes the availability of various investment avenues for gaining exposure to gold, including physical bullion, exchange-traded funds, digital gold, and derivatives, highlighting a transition towards more liquid options.

Navneet Damani, Head of Research for Commodities at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, remarked, “Gold is currently navigating a complex global environment.” While interest rate expectations and currency strength impose challenges, the broader outlook remains buoyed by uncertainty, inflation worries, and long-term demand for investment.

The report outlines multiple global factors that could influence the gold market. Geopolitical risks, stagnating global growth, and potential monetary policy easing later in the year may support gold prices in the long run. Conversely, ongoing inflation, a robust US dollar, and diminished physical demand could present issues in the near term.

As the festival of Akshaya Tritiya approaches, gold continues to be a dependable asset for Indian households, merging tradition with financial stability in a climate of uncertainty.
