Twelve Muslim men were detained and fined in Bareilly district, Uttar Pradesh, after police accused them of offering namaz inside a private house without permission. According to the Press Trust of India (PTI), the men were charged under legal provisions related to breaches of peace and were subsequently brought before a magistrate, who granted them bail.
Superintendent of Police (South) Anshika Verma stated that police intervention followed reports of a vacant house in Mohammedganj village being used as a temporary madrasa. “Conducting any new religious activity or gathering without permission is a violation of the law,” Verma noted, emphasizing that strict action would be taken against any repeat offenses.
The situation gained public attention when a video apparently showing the men engaged in prayers circulated widely on social media. The video was shared by several Hindutva accounts, often accompanied by derogatory comments aimed at Muslims.
Police investigations revealed that the house belonged to an individual named Hanif, who was reportedly using it temporarily for Friday prayers. They clarified that there was no evidence of permanent religious activity or institutional presence at the location.
The detainment of these individuals has sparked discussions regarding the regulation of Muslim religious practices, especially since private home prayers are common in various regions of the country due to the lack of accessible mosques or prayer spaces.
