Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, commemorated the 10th death anniversary of Rohith Vemula on Saturday by reiterating calls for the immediate implementation of the Rohith Vemula Act. He announced that Congress-led governments in Karnataka and Telangana are actively working towards enacting the law as soon as possible.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) shared on January 17, Rahul Gandhi reflected on Rohith Vemula’s life and questioned the equality of opportunity in the country. He stated, “Today marks 10 years since Rohith Vemula left us. But Rohith’s question still beats in our chests today: In this country, does everyone have an equal right to dream?”
Gandhi recalled Rohith’s ambitions, noting that he aspired to study, write, and comprehend science, society, and humanity to improve the nation. However, he asserted that the system was unable to accommodate a Dalit individual’s progress.
Addressing the persistent issues of institutional casteism, social exclusion, daily humiliations, and language that reinforces social hierarchies, Gandhi highlighted the systemic failures leading to the alienation of promising individuals. He raised concerns regarding whether conditions for Dalit youth have improved, emphasizing that they continue to face scorn on campuses, isolation in hostels, and violence.
He described the Rohith Vemula Act as essential, not merely rhetorical, underscoring the need for legal measures to criminalize caste discrimination within educational institutions and ensure accountability for perpetrators. “This fight is not just in Parliament. It is a fight on campuses, a fight of the youth—our fight,” he stated.
Gandhi encouraged Dalit youth to be vocal, organize collectively, and push for the swift implementation of the Rohith Vemula Act, stressing the urgency for anti-discrimination laws.
He concluded his remarks by asserting that India must strive for justice, humanity, and equality, ensuring that no Dalit student pays the ultimate price for their aspirations. “Rohith, your fight is our responsibility,” he stated.
