The district administration in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, commenced the demolition of the Hazrat Shaheed Syed Abdul Gani Shah Baba shrine on Sunday, acting on a directive from a local court that deemed the structure built on government land as illegal.

Located near an overbridge on the Deoria-Gorakhpur Road, the shrine faced demolition following the Sadar Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) court’s ruling, which declared the site as government property with no legal recognition for the shrine. After considering the perspectives of all involved parties, the court ordered the removal of the encroachment.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate Shruti Sharma confirmed that the demolition proceeded in accordance with legal protocols and in a peaceful manner. “The situation in the area is completely normal,” she stated.

Prior to the demolition, the shrine’s management committee began relocating items from the site. Committee president Rashid Khan expressed their compliance with the court’s order and their cooperation with the administration.

The controversy dates back to 2019 when local BJP leaders raised concerns about alleged illegal construction on government property.

Swami Prasad Maurya, National President of the Apni Janata Party, criticized the demolition of the shrine, labeling it as “extremely unfortunate” and a “cowardly act” by the district administration. He argued that the destruction of the historic structure not only compromised heritage but also wounded the sentiments of millions of Hindus and Muslims in the area, asserting that “the public will never forgive this.”

This incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding land use and religious sites in the region, reflecting broader issues related to heritage preservation and community sentiments.
