Sunali Khatun, a pregnant Muslim woman from West Bengal, has given birth at Rampurhat Medical College in Birbhum after a contentious return to India following Supreme Court intervention. Khatun had previously been labeled an illegal immigrant and forcibly deported to Bangladesh.

In a poignant twist, she gave birth without the presence of her husband and two children, who remain in Bangladesh. Trinamool Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee expressed his deep emotions regarding the birth of Khatun’s baby boy, framing it as a moment of joy overshadowed by the injustices she faced.

“This moment of joy feels even more profound against the backdrop of the injustice she was subjected to,” Banerjee stated in a social media post. He expressed his relief that Khatun had safely delivered a healthy baby at the medical facility, describing her experience as a grave violation of dignity.

Banerjee further criticized the actions of the Delhi Police and the Union government, alleging that Khatun was “falsely branded as a Bangladeshi” and forcibly removed from India. He praised her courage throughout her ordeal, calling her return and childbirth “a triumph of humanity.” He has stated his intention to visit her in the hospital to offer his best wishes.

Khatun re-entered India on December 6 with her eight-year-old son after a flag meeting between the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB). In June, Khatun, her husband Danish Sheikh, their son, and another resident, Sweety Bibi, along with her two children, were reportedly detained by Delhi Police and subsequently expelled.

The West Bengal government maintains that these individuals are Indian citizens who were unjustly deported as part of a broader campaign targeting Bengali-speaking migrants in BJP-governed regions. While the Union government has raised questions about the citizenship of Khatun’s remaining family members, it agreed to facilitate her return for humanitarian reasons.

As of now, Khatun’s husband, Danish Sheikh, Sweety Bibi, and her two children are still in Bangladesh, awaiting resolution of their legal status. Data from the Calcutta Research Group and Know Your Neighbour indicates that at least 30 individuals from West Bengal have faced arbitrary expulsions to Bangladesh, with many later being allowed to return after official verification of their citizenship status.
