New Delhi: Bhutan’s left-arm spinner Sonam Yeshey set a new world record during the third T20I against Myanmar by becoming the first bowler in T20 cricket history to achieve an eight-wicket haul. The 22-year-old finished with remarkable figures of 8/7 across his four-over spell in the match played on December 26. In total, he has claimed 12 wickets over four matches, with the final T20I scheduled for December 29.

Before Yeshey’s achievement, only two bowlers had recorded seven wickets in a men’s T20I: Syazul Idrus, who took 7/8 for Malaysia against China in 2023, and Ali Dawood, who recorded 7/19 for Bahrain against Bhutan in 2025. Additionally, in T20 cricket, Colin Ackermann and Taskin Ahmed had both taken seven wickets in 2019 and 2025, respectively.

In women’s T20 cricket, only four bowlers have taken seven wickets in a T20I match: Rohmalia (7/0 for Indonesia vs. Mongolia in 2024), Frederique Overdijk (7/3 for the Netherlands vs. France), Alison Stocks (7/3 for Argentina vs. Peru), and Samanthi Dunukedeniya (7/15 for Cyprus vs. Czech Republic).

In the match itself, Bhutan set a target of 127 runs, losing nine wickets in their 20 overs. Namgang Chejay led the batting with an unbeaten 50 runs off 45 balls. In reply, Sonam Yeshey’s exceptional bowling effort led to Myanmar being dismissed for just 45 runs in 9.2 overs, despite their openers contributing 21 runs in 2.1 overs.

Currently, Bhutan leads the five-match series with a 4-0 advantage and aims to complete a clean sweep against Myanmar with a victory on Monday.
