In a surprising turn for the Indian automobile industry, the year 2025 has witnessed significant developments, particularly in the passenger vehicle segment where SUVs have traditionally held sway, comprising nearly 55 percent of sales. Defying this trend, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire has emerged as the top-selling vehicle in the nation.
A milestone for the sedan segment
From January to November 2025, the Dzire secured sales of approximately 195,000 units, making it the best-selling car of the year. This achievement is notable as it represents only the second occasion in 41 years that a sedan has claimed the top position; the Dzire had previously achieved this feat in 2018.
Competitive SUV landscape: New challengers emerge
Although the Dzire leads overall sales, the SUV segment remains fiercely competitive. Notably, the Hyundai Creta and Mahindra Scorpio have been officially displaced from the top spot.
- Hyundai Creta: In second place with around 187,000 units sold.
- Tata Nexon: Holding third place with approximately 181,000 units sold.
Consumer favorites: WagonR and Ertiga
The remainder of the Top 5 list emphasizes the Indian consumer’s preference for practical and reliable vehicles:
- Maruti Suzuki WagonR: Ranked fourth, with sales at 179,000 units, highlighting the ongoing demand for affordable hatchbacks among Indian families.
- Maruti Suzuki Ertiga: The popular MPV completes the top five with approximately 175,000 units sold.
Maruti Suzuki’s enduring leadership
The 2025 sales data reinforces Maruti Suzuki’s prominent position in the Indian market, with the brand capturing three of the top four slots. The success of the Dzire signals that, while SUV styles and higher ground clearance are appealing, elements such as competitive pricing, exceptional fuel economy, and long-term reliability are equally important to the modern Indian consumer.
