A booth-level officer in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur district has died by suicide, with family members alleging that work-related stress from the special intensive revision of electoral rolls contributed to the tragedy. The deceased, identified as 30-year-old Umesh, was an instructor at Dariyapur pre-secondary school and resided in Ataria town.
According to Rakesh Kumar Gupta, inspector in charge of the Ataria police station, Umesh was found alone in his room. After his door remained closed for an extended period, authorities were alerted. Police reported that they forcibly entered the room, where Umesh was discovered hanging from a noose.
Family members claim that Umesh faced significant pressure due to his responsibilities as a booth-level officer during the electoral roll revision. No formal case has been registered regarding his death.
This incident is part of a troubling trend, as at least nine suicides and two deaths from stroke have been reported across West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Rajasthan amid similar work pressures during the electoral roll revision process.
