A student from Tripura has died after spending more than two weeks in a Uttarakhand hospital following a violent stabbing that police say began with allegedly racial slurs. Anjel Chakma, 24, a final-year MBA student at Jigyasa University in Dehradun, succumbed to injuries sustained during an assault on December 09.
According to EastMojo, the incident occurred in the Selaqui area of Dehradun when Chakma and his younger brother, Michael went out to buy groceries in the evening.
Michael said a group of intoxicated youths began harassing them, reportedly shouting racial epithets such as “Nepali,” “Chinese,” “Chinki,” and “momos,” and using local abuses targeting their appearance. When the brothers objected, the group allegedly attacked them.
Michael was struck on the head with a metal bangle, and Anjel was stabbed multiple times.
Police have arrested five people in connection with the attack. The accused have been identified as Avinash Negi, Shaurya Rajput, Suraj Khawas, Ayush Badoni and Sumit. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and efforts are underway to locate other suspects.
