A young Muslim woman who traveled to Gujarat to take a railway recruitment examination has claimed that she was asked to remove her hijab in front of male staff before being allowed entry to the exam center.
In a widely circulated video, the woman states that she was halted at the entrance and informed by exam personnel that she could not participate in the examination unless she removed her hijab. She described the demand as humiliating, as it was made in the presence of male officials.
According to her account, when she protested and sought assistance from police officers on-site, a female police officer allegedly downplayed her concerns, reportedly saying, “If they are saying so, then just remove it.”
The candidate asserts that the incident infringes upon her dignity, privacy, and religious freedoms. She expressed feeling forced to choose between her religious beliefs and her right to appear for an examination for which she had prepared extensively and traveled from another state.
“This is not just about me. It is about the rights of Muslim women and the freedom to practice one’s religion without humiliation,” she stated in the video, emphasizing her intent to pursue legal action against the examination authority.
The incident has sparked significant backlash on social media, with activists and civil rights organizations questioning the exam center’s adherence to guidelines regarding religious attire. Previous instructions from examination bodies permit religious clothing, including hijabs, as long as reasonable checks are conducted, preferably by female staff in private settings, when necessary.
As of now, there has been no official response from railway recruitment authorities or the Gujarat police regarding the allegations. The circulation of the video has intensified calls for a formal inquiry into the incident.
The woman expressed hope that her case will prevent similar treatment of candidates in the future.
