Chennai Super Kings Engage in Major Trade Ahead of IPL 2026
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have made significant moves in preparation for the IPL 2026 retention day, parting ways with Ravindra Jadeja and acquiring Sanju Samson. Samson is seen as a valuable addition to the squad, offering essential experience and stability at the top of the order. He also has the potential to succeed MS Dhoni as both the wicketkeeper and a team leader.
Despite the recent acquisition of Samson, CSK still has several areas that require improvement. Following a challenging last season, where they finished at the bottom of the table, the franchise will look to strengthen its roster during the mini-auction scheduled for December 16. Among the targets for the auction are three key players:
1. Wanindu Hasaranga
CSK’s need for enhanced spin options and lower-order batting is pressing. Historically, the team has sought contributions from their number eight batsman, allowing greater flexibility for Dhoni. Hasaranga, who was released by Rajasthan Royals after being signed for INR 5.25 crore, is likely to be a target for CSK as they look to bolster their spin department.
2. Ravi Bishnoi
Ravi Bishnoi was retained by Lucknow Super Giants for INR 11 crore prior to the IPL 2025 mega auction but did not meet expectations in the last season, managing only nine wickets in 11 matches with an economy rate of 10.83. Consequently, he was released by LSG. CSK is expected to express significant interest in Bishnoi, as he could provide the quality needed to enhance their spin lineup.
3. Liam Livingstone
Liam Livingstone is another prime target for CSK. He was acquired by Royal Challengers Bengaluru for INR 8.75 crore before IPL 2025, but CSK made a close bid of INR 8.5 crore. With INR 43.40 crore remaining in their budget, the team may finally secure Livingstone, who is identified as a solution to CSK’s finishing issues by offering the ability to bat at six and contribute with bowling.
