The Kremlin announced on Monday that India will proceed with its oil purchases wherever it remains beneficial for its economic interests. This statement comes in the wake of heightened tensions, as U.S. President Donald Trump increased tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent in August, citing India’s imports of Russian oil as a contributing factor to funding Russia’s military actions in Ukraine.

During a visit to New Delhi last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin offered India assurances of consistent fuel supplies. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized in a call with reporters, “India, as a sovereign state, conducts foreign trade operations and purchases energy resources where it is beneficial for India. As we understand, our Indian partners will continue this policy to ensure their economic interests.”

The remarks underscore India’s commitment to prioritizing its energy needs amid geopolitical pressures.
