Riyan Parag’s position within the Rajasthan Royals remains uncertain as the franchise undergoes a major leadership transition ahead of IPL 2026. With former captain Sanju Samson traded to Chennai Super Kings before the retention deadline, speculation regarding the captaincy has increased, yet Parag has opted to refrain from publicly addressing the discussions surrounding him.
Given his leadership experience with the Assam team in domestic white-ball competitions, Parag possesses a solid background in captaincy. In IPL 2025, he stepped in for Samson during a period of absence, leading the Royals in eight matches alongside notable players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shimron Hetmyer, and Wanindu Hasaranga. Parag’s brief experience highlighted the pressures of leadership in the context of a high-profile franchise.
“I captained in seven to eight matches in the IPL last season. In the dressing room, when we would analyse decisions, I have done things right 80 to 85 per cent,” Parag told Sportstar.
Team owner Manoj Badale’s position has affected Parag’s approach as the Royals plan to finalize their new captain after the auction on December 16 in Abu Dhabi, leaving internal candidates, including Parag, in limbo. Parag has adopted a pragmatic view toward the timeline.
“Manoj [Badale] sir has said the decision [on captaincy] will be taken after the auction. If I think about that now, I will ruin my mental space. If the team management feels I am the right fit for captaincy, I am ready to put my hand up. If they feel that, as a player, I can contribute more, I am ready for that also,” he stated.
Beyond on-field strategies, Parag recognizes the significant off-field responsibilities that come with captaining an IPL franchise.
“Everyone has the misconception that captaincy is easy. Yes, there is an element of fame in captaincy, but it reduces the element of cricket to 20 per cent. You have to attend all the meetings, go to sponsor shoots, and respond to the media. I need to develop these aspects as a person,” he added.
There is also speculation around whether Ravindra Jadeja, recently acquired, may take on leadership duties for Rajasthan in IPL 2026. Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel are further candidates for the captaincy, although the Royals’ strategy to avoid costly local signings indicates that their next captain will likely emerge from the current squad.
