The Trinamool Congress (TMC) suspended Debra MLA Humayun Kabir on Thursday following his announcement to construct a mosque modeled after the Babri Masjid in the Beldanga area of Murshidabad district. His comments came earlier this week when he stated his intention to lay the foundation stone for the mosque on December 6.
The Babri Masjid, located in Ayodhya, was demolished on December 6, 1992, by Hindu nationalist groups, including the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which claimed an ancient Ram temple was situated at that location. In 2019, the Supreme Court of India ruled that the site should be allocated to a trust for the construction of a Ram temple. This temple was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 22, 2024.
Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim announced the decision to suspend Kabir, emphasizing that the legislator had previously received multiple warnings regarding his statements. “We noticed that one of our MLAs from Murshidabad suddenly declared that he would build the Babri Masjid,” Hakim remarked. “Why suddenly Babri Masjid? We already warned him.”
The TMC’s action reflects its effort to manage internal party discipline in light of sensitive communal issues in the region.
