India’s bowling coach, Morne Morkel, has announced that Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, who serve as captain and vice-captain in the ODI format, are making positive progress in their recovery. While both players have been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, their fitness is being closely monitored due to the busy cricket schedule ahead.
Gill sustained a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata, while Iyer has been sidelined since suffering a laceration to his spleen while fielding during Australia’s recent tour. Morkel provided updates on their conditions, stating, “I think the best is for the medical [team] to give that [update]. I spoke to Shubman two days ago just to check in with him, and he is recovering well. So, that is pleasing to hear.”
He also noted that Iyer has initiated his rehabilitation, indicating optimism for their eventual return to the squad. “The good thing is that they are healthy and starting their preparation for their return to the team,” Morkel added.
In the absence of Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal is expected to open the innings alongside Rohit Sharma, with Ruturaj Gaikwad serving as a backup option. For Iyer’s position, the competing candidates include Rishabh Pant and Tilak Varma for the number four batting role.
Regarding the ODI series, Morkel addressed the team’s situation following a 0-2 Test series defeat against South Africa, suggesting that the shift to ODIs might benefit Team India. He acknowledged that the visitors carry significant momentum into this format. “It’s a change of color in clothing and a change of ball which always brings a different energy. A confident Protea team is a dangerous team,” he explained. Morkel emphasized the importance of starting strongly and playing solid cricket over the coming days to regain focus after recent setbacks.
He added, “Luckily, we have got some good experience in the team. For us, it is now about focusing for the next two days, preparing well, and moving forward.”
