Hamas issued a statement on Thursday condemning the alleged systematic killing and torture of Palestinian detainees in Israeli detention facilities, calling for international intervention to address these reported abuses.
In its statement, Hamas highlighted the “grave violations” experienced by Palestinian prisoners, citing live testimonies and reports from credible human rights organizations. These violations reportedly include severe beatings, scalding with boiling water, attacks by dogs, and sexual assault, which Hamas argues constitute war crimes under international humanitarian law.
According to the group, at least 94 Palestinians have died in Israeli prisons since the escalation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip began in October 2023. Hamas described the situation as reflective of an organized criminal approach that has transformed these detention facilities into “direct killing grounds.”
Hamas emphasized the inhumane conditions faced by prisoners, detailing ongoing torture methods such as severe beatings, scalding, and sexual assaults, backed by numerous eyewitness accounts and human rights reports. “The continued international silence regarding this level of brutal torture represents an open authorization for the occupation to continue killing within detention cells,” the statement added.
The call for action extended to the international community, the United Nations, and various human rights organizations. Hamas urged these entities to exert pressure on Israel to halt abuses against prisoners and ensure that their rights are protected in accordance with international covenants.
A report submitted to the UN Committee Against Torture by Israeli human rights organizations corroborated many of Hamas’s claims, detailing severe torture practices inflicted upon Palestinian detainees, including rape, physical assaults, denial of medical care, and extreme conditions such as sleep and food deprivation.
Currently, over 10,000 Palestinians, including women and children, are reported to be held in Israeli prisons, according to data from Palestinian, Israeli, and international human rights groups. In contrast, Israel denies that systematic violations are occurring, a claim that is rejected by various human rights organizations which are advocating for immediate international intervention to stop what they characterize as “systematic crimes” against detainees.
