The Election Commission has mandated the removal of the “IPS” designation from promotional materials for R. Sreelekha, a former police officer and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the Sasthamangalam ward in the upcoming Thiruvananthapuram Corporation elections.
This decision was prompted by a complaint from T. S. Reshmi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate, who argued that it is unlawful for Sreelekha to use the “IPS” title following her retirement from active service.
In line with this ruling, the Election Commission instructed the removal of “IPS” from campaign posters throughout various locations. In some areas, BJP supporters responded by substituting “IPS” with “retired IPS.”
Sreelekha, who was the first female IPS officer from Kerala and has held the position of Director General of Police, is running for municipal elections under the banner of the BJP. She remarked, “Even though the ‘IPS’ designation is removed, everyone knows me.”
The Commission’s directive and the subsequent amendments represent a procedural challenge for her campaign, as the elimination of her police-service title may influence voter perceptions in the civic election.
