Tata Asset Management, one of the oldest and leading mutual fund houses in India, is set to launch a Specialised Investment Fund (SIF) under the Titanium category. This will mark the fund house’s first SIF, focusing on a hybrid long-short investment strategy that combines equity, debt, and derivative exposures to help investors navigate various market conditions with improved risk-adjusted outcomes. The fund will also have provisions to invest in fixed income instruments and Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs).
The new fund offer (NFO) will open for subscriptions on Monday. It is aimed at high-risk investors, requiring a minimum investment of ₹10 lakh at the PAN level across SIFs in an Asset Management Company (AMC). The fund will allocate at least 25% to equities and debt and will allow a maximum of 25% unhedged exposure to short instruments. This strategic allocation enables the fund to capitalize on market upswings through long positions in equities and derivatives, while also cushioning downside risks via short strategies and arbitrage opportunities.
The investment strategy will leverage equity derivatives to capitalize on market movements, allowing the fund to pursue opportunities in both rising and falling stocks, thereby managing risk during periods of volatility. Anand Vardarajan, Chief Business Officer at Tata Asset Management, noted that historically, markets are in an upward trend approximately 65% of the time, with 35% of the time spent in downward swings or flat periods. He emphasized that while traditional portfolios may yield better returns during bullish phases, the introduction of the SIF allows investors to potentially benefit even during downturns through derivatives.
Suraj Nanda, Fund Manager for Titanium SIF, stated that by strategically employing both long and short positions, the fund aims to achieve risk-adjusted returns while moderating volatility.
Once an investor commits to the minimum ₹10 lakh, they can initiate a Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) with a minimum of ₹1,000 across at least six installments, along with a minimum top-up of ₹500, which can be made in multiples of ₹500. The fund will publish its Net Asset Value (NAV) daily, but redemptions will only be permitted on the first of each month. Fresh investments can be made on any working day.
This initiative underscores Tata Asset Management’s commitment to providing sophisticated investment solutions in an evolving marketplace.
