Rawalpindi: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has imposed a fine on Pakistan cricket captain Babar Azam for violating the code of conduct during the third One Day International (ODI) against Sri Lanka held in Rawalpindi. Azam has been penalized 10% of his match fee for contravening Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Support Personnel, which pertains to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.” Additionally, a demerit point has been added to his disciplinary record, marking his first infraction in the past 24 months.

The offense occurred in the 21st over while Pakistan was chasing a target of 212 runs. Babar Azam was dismissed for 34 runs by bowler Jeffrey Vandersay, leading to his frustration with the decision. In reaction, he struck the stumps with his bat as he walked off the field, prompting the ICC to find him in violation of the conduct code.

According to an ICC statement, the charge was brought forth by on-field umpires Alex Wharf and Rashid Riaz, along with third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Faisal Afridi. The sanction was proposed by Ali Naqvi of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. Babar Azam accepted the penalty, negating the need for a formal hearing.

Despite the incident, it has been a noteworthy series for Babar Azam, as he ended a century drought in international cricket after 83 innings. He achieved his 20th ODI century during the second game of the series, which aided Pakistan in chasing down a target of 289 runs and ultimately concluding the series in that match.
