In Qazigund, South Kashmir, the father of a detained youth reportedly attempted suicide, prompting warnings from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief about the impact of heavy-handed policing. Bilal Ahmad Wani, a dry-fruit seller from Wanpora Qazigund, was critically injured after attempting to set himself on fire in response to the recent detention of his son, Jasir Bilal, and brother, Naveel Wani, by the police.
Bilal and his family are neighbors of Dr. Adeel Rather, currently in custody in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, linked to a suspected terror module. Dr. Adeel’s brother, Dr. Muzaffar, is said to be absconding.
Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti expressed her concerns via social media, revealing that Bilal Wani was in critical condition at SMHS Hospital in Srinagar after his suicide attempt, exacerbated by his fears for the safety of his family. She posted a photograph showing the extent of his injuries and noted that Wani had pleaded for a chance to see his detained relatives, a request that was denied.
Mufti emphasized that the government’s “high-handedness” only exacerbates the situation, warning that indiscriminate detentions could lead to increased anger and despair among the youth. She called on the Jammu & Kashmir Police to allow the family to meet their detained members.
During a PDP executive committee meeting, Mehbooba highlighted the importance of dialogue, arguing that the government should focus less on security measures and more on engagement with the community. She stated that there has been no dialogue since the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in 2019, which she believes has left many feeling marginalized and fearful.
Mufti urged the central government to seek a compassionate approach rather than relying on pressure tactics. She referenced her late father, Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, expressing disappointment that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has not upheld the inclusive vision he had for the region.
While she supported thorough investigations—like those regarding the recent Red Fort blast—she cautioned against painting the larger population of Kashmir as perpetrators due to the actions of a few. She called for political, social, and religious leaders to motivate the youth towards positive paths, emphasizing hope rather than despair.
Additionally, security agencies have increased their actions in Kashmir, with multiple detentions occurring during ongoing investigations, including searches conducted by the Counter Intelligence Kashmir unit at a residence in Anantnag.
