New Delhi: New Zealand began their ODI series against the West Indies with a narrow victory in the first match on November 16. After setting a target of 269 runs, the Black Caps successfully restricted the West Indies to 262, clinching the game by seven runs.
A standout performance came from Daryl Mitchell, who scored 119 runs off 118 balls after entering the batting lineup following the loss of two early wickets. However, the team’s prospects have been hindered by a significant injury concern. During his innings, Mitchell sustained a groin strain, casting doubt on his availability for the remainder of the series. He will remain in Christchurch to undergo medical scans.
New Zealand is already facing an escalating injury crisis, missing several key players, including Mohammad Abbas (ribs), Finn Allen (foot), Lockie Ferguson (hamstring), Adam Milne (ankle), Will O’Rourke (back), Glenn Phillips (groin), and Ben Sears (hamstring). The addition of Mitchell to this list exacerbates the challenges for the team.
To address these difficulties, left-handed batter Henry Nicholls has been called up for the second ODI against the West Indies in Napier. Nicholls is in good form, and his inclusion in the squad may provide a much-needed boost to the Black Caps in Mitchell’s potential absence.
